Inside the World of the Red Fox
The red fox is a widely distributed species found throughout North America, ranging from the Arctic regions to areas deep into Central America. It has a slim and agile body, long legs, a narrow pointed face, upright triangular ears, and a large fluffy tail that is typically marked with a white tip. Gray foxes also inhabit Maryland, but they can be distinguished by their darker tail tips and generally smaller size compared with red foxes.

Habitat
Red foxes thrive in environments that contain a combination of open grasslands, wooded areas, and wetlands. The diverse landscapes found throughout modern Maryland provide excellent conditions for these adaptable animals. Because of their ability to adjust to different surroundings, red foxes can also be found living near human communities, including suburban neighborhoods and urban areas.
Although red foxes are considered native wildlife in Maryland, historical accounts suggest that some early European settlers introduced additional red foxes from Europe. These animals were released by landowners for use in traditional fox hunting activities with hounds.
Diet
Red foxes are omnivores, which means their diet includes both animal and plant-based foods. They are opportunistic feeders and consume a wide range of available food sources. Their typical diet may include rabbits, rodents, birds, reptiles, insects, berries, and various types of fruit.
Reproduction
Red foxes generally use dens only during the breeding season when they are caring for their young. Both the male and female foxes participate in raising and protecting the pups. Mating usually takes place between January and March.
After a pregnancy period of approximately 51 to 53 days, the female gives birth in spring to a litter that commonly contains around four or five pups. Although red foxes are capable of creating their own underground shelters, they often modify abandoned burrows made by other animals, such as groundhogs. They may also choose sheltered spaces beneath decks, sheds, or similar structures as den sites.
Outside of the breeding and pup-rearing period, red foxes usually avoid using dens. Instead, they rest in protected outdoor locations and depend on their thick fur to help them stay warm throughout the year.
Sounds
Red foxes are highly vocal animals and communicate through a variety of sounds, including barking, howling, whining, and screeching. Their calls can range from short, sharp yaps and repeated barking sounds to louder combinations of screams, cries, and extended howls. These vocalizations are used for communication with other foxes and can vary depending on the situation.
Behavior
Unlike wolves and domestic dogs, which typically live in social groups, red foxes are generally solitary animals except during the mating season and the period when parents are raising their young. They are intelligent creatures capable of learning through experience, which has contributed to their reputation as clever and resourceful animals in folklore and literature.
Their ability to adapt to changing environments, combined with their intelligence and careful wildlife management, allows red fox populations to continue thriving. These adaptable animals are expected to remain a part of the Chesapeake Bay watershed ecosystem for many years to come.
